About the Kizhi

What is Kizhi? Kizhi (also known as Potali Sweda) is a classical Kerala Ayurvedic therapy in which warm herbal poultices — tightly bound bundles containing medicinal herbs, leaves, powders, or processed rice — are applied rhythmically over the body with gentle pressure and heat. The combination of therapeutic heat, medicated herbs, and skilled application works to penetrate deeply into the muscles, joints, and connective tissue, relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and restoring mobility. At Kurichiyil Ayurveda, different forms of Kizhi are prescribed depending on the clinical presentation. Elakizhi uses fresh medicinal leaves, Njavarakizhi employs a specialised medicated rice with powerful rejuvenating properties, and Podikizhi uses herbal powders — each suited to specific conditions and constitutions. What are the benefits of Kizhi? Effective relief from chronic joint and muscular pain Reduces inflammation and swelling in arthritic conditions Improves range of motion and joint flexibility Nourishes and strengthens muscle tissue Stimulates circulation and supports detoxification through the skin Deeply relaxing, with lasting relief from stiffness Recommended For: Osteoarthritis · Rheumatoid arthritis · Cervical and lumbar spondylosis · Sports injuries · Muscular pain and stiffness · Post-operative rehabilitation Duration of the treatment: 45 to 75 minutes per session, as prescribed.
